WWF x Berqana: Ranger Survival Training

In a world where kids spend a majority of their time behind their screens on the couch, I find it important to establish an early connection between kids and nature. Too much screen time could result into social isolation, cyber bullying, comparison with others and low-self esteem, or overstimulation. Nature documentaries aren’t exciting for kids. They would rather watch influencers on YouTube or TikTok.

Learning wilderness survival skills is a great way of desensitizing the brain and connecting with nature in an exciting way. WWF requested me to provide three workshops in survival training for the next generation of rangers in Amsterdam.

Survival training Special Forces Prospects

This class of Special Forces (SF) prospects (faces blurred) are trained for the SF para unit to be dropped behind enemy lines. In the scene below, we are demonstrating how not to make a fire behind enemy lines and speak about stealth camping and dakota fire holes. A mistake that beginners often make is that they create a big fire. Big fires can be seen from a distance and also need big logs. Big logs means more wood processing and which results into burning more calories and leaving more traces. Survival is all about conserving calories. Stealth fires are small, hot, and need a lot of air as it results into a fire with little smoke.
