Start and build a campfire

Fire-making

There are several techniques to ignite a fire. One of the easiest way is using a lighter. However, the process towards a long-lasting camp fire contains of multiple stages:

1. Ignition or combustion of tinder material;
2. gradually build up the fire;
3. maintain the fire.

Every stage of this process requires its own type of wood and size. For instance: pine is a flammable wood, but is quite unstable and burns quickly. Oak is difficult to ignite, it needs a lot of heat, but it also gives a lot of heat and burns slowely. In the video below, I’m demonstrating how to spot a dead standing tree, how to process firewood, and I introduce the ‘star fire’ construction.

If you’d like to learn and practise different fire-making techniques, have a look at my workshops and expeditions. I teach a variety of fire-making techniques, both modern and primitive way. I’d like to show you how to create an invisible and stealth fire. Yes, an invisible fire. Not invisble to you, but for others. Curious?
